The Tadami Line, one of Japan's most scenic local train lines, and Mugenkyo, an ethereal canyon enveloped in river mist.
Along the Tadami River that flows through Okuaizu, immerse yourself in the nature and culture of the region on a special tour.
What is Mugenkyo?
The Tadami River brings abundant blessings to the region known as Okuaizu in southwestern Fukushima Prefecture. The basin that crosses the town of Kaneyama is carved into a deep gorge. On summer mornings and evenings, the river is shrouded in a magical haze. The misty valley has a fragile beauty, which is why the area is called Mugenkyo (“Misty Gorge”).
From spring to fall, rowboat ferries operate in Mugenkyo, allowing visitors to enjoy the mountain and lake scenery that spreads out before their eyes.
There was once a village called Mifuke in the vicinity of Mugenkyo. Mifuke was a settlement of hillside houses scattered along the Tadami River. Each family owned a Japanese-style boat; both adults and children rowed their boats along the Tadami River. However, in 1964, rainwater caused the hill behind the houses to collapse. Mifuke, with its 300 years of history, was abandoned and the villagers were forced to relocate en masse.
About half a century later, in 2010, volunteers from the former Mifuke village brought back the Japanese-style boats that had been used until the village was abandoned. This was the starting point for today's sightseeing boats.
